We Are Lawrence

New Paint, old favorites

By Terry Date Staff writer

Artist Susan Kneeland relishes the deadline pressure that comes with the New Paint adventure, an annual invigorating happening that raises money for the Essex Art Center in Lawrence.

The first part of the happening is the creation portion, which will be handled by the artists next Saturday, May 30. The second part of the happening is the gala event and auction, to be held on Friday, June 5, at the Stevens Estate in North Andover.

Kneeland has painted in each of those years, embracing the spontaneity and risk that comes with having to create a work in a single day — a New Paint requirement.

She’ll bring that feeling with her when she carries her canvas, brush and paints to Haverhill’s Tupelo Bridge, the place she plans to capture on the designated paint day next weekend.
