Federal grant creates new preschool classrooms in Lawrence

Lawrence received $2.35 million for its program this year. The state received about $15 million overall, and is eligible to receive another $15 million per year for three more years under the federal initiative, bringing the potential total for the grant up to $60 million, officials said.

On Friday, Department of Early Education and Care Commissioner Tom Weber was on hand with Mayor Daniel Rivera; State Sen. Barbara L'Italien (D-Andover), state Rep. Marcos Devers (D-Lawrence) and state Rep. Diana DiZoglio (D-Methuen), all of whom serve on the Joint Committee on Education; and several school and local officials to tour some of the preschool classrooms created through the grant.
