Northern Essex CC to open culinary school after Lupoli foundation gift

By Joe Halpern, Boston Business Journal

The family foundation of local real estate and pizza mogul Sal Lupoli recently pledged $500,000 to Northern Essex Community College, a gift that will help NECC open a new school of hospitality and culinary arts next year.

The school announced the Lupoli Family Foundation's pledge last week. Sal Lupoli is CEO of Lawrence-based real estate development firm Lupoli Companies, which also operates the Sal’s Pizza Italian food chain.

The Lupoli Family School of Hospitality & Culinary Arts will occupy two floors of The Heights, a 10-story luxury, mixed-use development project being built by Lupoli Cos. The 65,000 square-foot building is located at 192 Merrimack St. in downtown Haverhill.

According to the announcement, Northern Essex would lease space on the second and third floors of the building. That space will include culinary labs, a computer lab, a restaurant and classroom space.

The building will also have a first-floor restaurant and a 10th floor function facility, which would provide internship opportunities for Northern Essex students. The new school will have room for 200 students enrolled in various programs.
